Saltworks celebrates big year
23rd December 2015 - Townsville Bulletin
It's hard to miss the stacks of harvested washed salt when driving into Bowen.
Australian Saltworks is celebrating the end of its first harvest that has produced 20,000 tonnes of salt.
The Australian-owned business purchased the 160ha saltworks in mid-2014 and spent the rest of the year carrying out works to bring the site up to standard after being left idle for years.
Australian Saltworks director Michael McNamara said the company was granted a new 50-year salt lease that had allowed it to undertake the necessary investment to get fully operational.
"Australian Saltworks has invested heavily in getting the site back in shape and we're really happy to have been able to produce really good quantities of salt in the first year of operation," Mr McNamara said.
"Dry conditions throughout most of 2015 have really worked in our favour.
"We're here for the long term. Bowen is a great place to make salt."
The company plans on carrying out further development works next year and expects to employ about 10 full-time workers at the site.
It is also committed to using local contractors for goods and services.
